Christy Harrison Schaefer is the head of the firm’s Workers’ Compensation Subrogation practice group. She devotes a significant portion of her practice to the investigation and prosecution of complex workers’ compensation and property subrogation claims on behalf of large and small insurers, self-insured companies and third-party administrators.

Christy is a highly-regarded industry lecturer on workers’ compensation case law, trends and cost-effective recovery strategy, and performs frequent client training seminars and file reviews to outfit in-house recovery representatives with effective and concise techniques for maximizing lien recovery. In the past several years, Christy has been frequently retained by her clients and their insureds to provide legal consultation on workplace safety and related industrial/construction loss topics both in conjunction with pending litigation and in a more directed risk management capacity.

Christy litigates files in all fifty states, and is licensed to practice law in Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota. She has been admitted to practice before the Federal District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan and the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, and has been granted pro hac vice admission in more than sixty Circuit, Superior, District and Appellate Courts throughout the United States.

Ms. Schaefer received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University in 1991 and her Juris Doctor degree from Indiana University-Bloomington School of Law in 1995. After graduating from law school, Ms. Schaefer served as a Marion County, Indiana Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Major Felony division, and was ultimately appointed as the Metro Gang Task Force lead. While serving as a Deputy Prosecutor, Christy tried more than 50 jury trials to verdict.

After leaving the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, Ms. Schaefer joined the law firm of Clausen Miller, P.C. as a senior associate specializing in commercial and residential fire loss subrogation. Before joining NZA in 2005, Ms. Schaefer was a partner at the Chicago Office of Cozen O’Connor, where she fine-tuned her expertise in workers’ compensation subrogation, fire spread, products liability, construction defects and mold loss recovery.
